Creativity and Genre

     The creative process is extremely important when embarking in a new endeavor. In order to make original content and effectively display your ideas through your work, you must think creatively. In the Ted Talk about the theory of creativity, it was mentioned that children think more expansively and we begin to think more reductively as we get older because education teaches us to look for only one right answer. In order to think more creatively, we must teach ourselves to get out of the mindset that there is one correct answer we should be looking for and start thinking about all possible answers. 

    In the new introductions activity I compared myself to a lion because I am confident. I think this trait will allow me to be creative because I am typically confident in my ideas even if they may be wrong. I also added in that I am like a bird because I like exploring which I think in a good trait because it allows me to see more things and be open to new ideas, which can allow for creativity. 

    Adding on to this idea, in the Gale article, “An Interview with Rob Beghetto: Subtle Nuances of Creativity in Learning and Life”, they state, “Following Albert Bandura, we can say that creative self-efficacy is developed by taking creative action, making progress, receiving honest and supportive (i.e., improvement focused) feedback and encouragement from trusted others, observing relatable people creatively perform on tasks.... In short, creative self-efficacy is shaped by and helps shape our creative behaviors.” This quote means that in order to gain creative self-efficacy, we must attempt new things creatively, make progress, and receive positive feedback from trusted peers. This encourages me to attempt to show my creativity and not get discouraged if it isn’t good or doesn’t work the first time because eventually, I will make progress. Some others that work in the drama comedy category include the director of Clueless, Amy Heckerling. Amy is known for directing several drama comedy movies and I want to emulate her work in the aspect that she has lighthearted comedy sprinkled throughout the film. Clueless is one of my favorite movies and I want to emulate it in the way that there are many funny moments, but also serious moments that contain life lessons or dramatic scenes. Another person who works in the drama comedy genre is the director of The Truman Show, Peter Weir. I enjoy this movie and how it has both emotional and funny moments throughout and I would like to emulate the versatility that is shown throughout the film. 

    Overall, for my group’s portfolio I see us doing a drama comedy film that shows the everyday struggles of teenage girls and their sports. I think a drama comedy is the best genre for this because we can incorporate humor but also have serious moments that show that everyone has struggles and you aren’t alone. I love the drama comedy genre because I enjoy the versatility of the mood throughout the film as well as the funny and relatable moments.
